Cuts to Radiation Oncology Health Program Grants (ROHPG)
Posted 20th March 2017

At the end of 2016, the Government announced in the Mid-year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) that it will achieve “efficiencies” in the ROHPG Scheme of $18.7 million over three years, commencing 1 July 2017. However, the Faculty of Radiation Oncology at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) estimates that these cuts will be closer to $67 million over this period, which would be devastating to the small radiation oncology sector.

The Faculty of Radiation Oncology (FRO) is very concerned about these changes and the impact they will have on patient access to advanced radiation therapy techniques and the provision of quality radiation oncology services. The FRO has approached the Government with these concerns and are asking them to review this decision. An outline of these concerns can be found here.

The FRO has recently contacted ASMIRT seeking support for their advocacy efforts.

ASMIRT encourages its members to write to their local MPs, outlining their concerns as per the attached summary.

ASMIRT Chief Executive Sally Kincaid and the ASMIRT Board have also received advice from the Radiation Therapy Advisory Panel (RTAP). The Board is yet to provide response to the panel.
