 NRRTW

National Radiographers and Radiation Therapists' Week 2-8 November 2016

NRRTW was embraced by departments Australia wide with over 130 celebration packs ordered. These packs included NRRTW themed posters, lollipops, stickers and balloons to assist departments in each state with their activities to raise awareness among the wider community and celebrate the achievements of our professions.

ASMIRT was impressed by the amount of departments and individuals that joined in the celebrations. From baking competitions, quizzes, morning teas, dress ups and videos it’s great to see members unite together to celebrate and proudly represent the profession.

The Winner - Western Health Radiology Department

We are pleased to announce that Western Health Radiology Department are the 2016 winners. The Radiography Interns along with Tutor Adam Steward put together a creative video in Star Wars theme titled ‘Star Wars – The Radiographer Awakens’. In the video Tutor Adam Steward leads the Radiography Interns to restore peace to the department after the Sonographers have ‘risen from the ashes of their dark ultra sound rooms’ to recruit Radiographers to ultrasound. If you haven’t had the chance to watch the video head over to the ASMIRTorg YouTube channel.

Second Place - Dalby Diagnostic Imaging

  Dalby

In second place, proving that size does not matter when it comes to getting the community involved, Dalby Diagnostic Imaging. This small rural practice not only celebrated amongst themselves but engaged kindergarten children from one of the local day-care centres. The children had shown previous interest in looking at x-rays in their classroom, so the Dalby team extended an invitation to join in the celebrations with a visit to the centre. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning all about x-rays and how they are taken, CT scanning (and the moving bed) and how an ultrasound is performed. At the end of the tour the team shared in some cake for morning tea and presented the children with a little goodie bag to take home. This included a special skeleton straw, stickers, lollypops and their very own x-ray of Buzz Lightyear! A reporter from the Dalby Herald reported on the event with an article promoting Radiography as a profession.

Our judging panel also requested an honourable mention for Redland Hospital Medical Imaging Department who supported the ‘Capes for Kids’ charity. Radiographers and staff throughout Redland Hospital wore the capes for the week to promote and bring an awareness of the charity's great work.

Another honourable mention goes to Bundaberg Hospital that hosted a radiography themed morning tea with clever decorations of hanging x-rays in their hallways.

Congratulations to all of you!

ASMIRT would like to say a big thank you and congratulations to all who participated and celebrated NRRTW with events around the country. To view all of the competition entries please visit the ASMIRTorg Facebook page and YouTube channels.

NRRTW 2015

National Radiographers and Radiation Therapists' Week 2-8 November 2015

The Winner - Macquarie University Hospital Radiation Therapy Department

  Macquarie University Hospital

Macquarie University Hospital celebrated NRRTW 2015 with the theme "Mythbusters", to bust some RT myths held by their patients. Inservices were also held on Wednesday and Thursday for the staff on imaging protocol and low dose CBCT scans.

On the Thursday night Macquarie Hospital held a girls' night in to raise funds for women with cancer, which included mini facials, trivia games and informing hospital staff members what radiation therapy is and what RTs do.

A consumer forum was held on Friday for patients, giving them a chance to ask questions and provide feedback. They also had speakers from Look Good Feel Better, Camp Quality, Cancer Council and Prostate Awareness talk at a forum to provide information to patients.

Every day they held a dress up theme - Monday - Blue; Tuesday - Melbourne Cup; Wednesday - Orange; Thursday - Pink (for girls night in); Friday - Mufti with gold coin donation towards Camp Quality. This was a fantastic effort and a well-deserving recipient of a morning tea or celebration for staff to the value of $500!

Tamworth

Runner Up - "Whole of Tamworth" entry

Congratulations also go to the "Whole of Tamworth" video entry which celebrates the contributions Tamworth’s Radiographers and Radiation Therapists make to the community and the broader district. The lead speaker is Col Murray, Mayor of Tamworth with additional comments from a former patient and several health care professionals. The video was produced by Dave Willis, Chair of Beam Kids and Chief Radiation Therapist at the North West Cancer Centre, Tamworth. The video was featured on the social media pages of Tamworth Regional Council and Westpac Rescue Helicopter with retweets by the AIR and RANZCR, attracting nearly 500 total plays (800 page views) in 31 countries that week.  A request has been made for a donation to be made to the region’s Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service in lieu of a prize.

Special mention Our peer judging panel also requested special mention be given to Lady Cilento Children's Hospital and Liverpool/MacArthur Cancer Therapy Centre for their entries.  Lady Cilento Children's Hospital decided to focus on showing the children and their parents what x-rays are all about, and some of their enthusiastic staff imaged lots of the toys and put them up for the children to guess who and what they were. They also put together some x-ray puzzles for the children to play with.

Liverpool/MacArthur Cancer Therapy Centre celebrated NRRTW in conjunction with Melbourne Cup to show the community how "Fascinating" the profession is. They displayed a timeline of Radiotherapy starting from 1895 to present day, and staff wore fascinators and top hats with bow ties including a handmade RT fascinator. An information stall was held to create public awareness regarding Radiotherapy and the equipment used. An added attraction was the Electron Tree and a Linear Accelerator wave guide.

Congratulations to all of you!

A big congratulations must go to each and every one of you who planned and participated in NRRTW events around the country this year. More photos of the winners and other entries will feature in our February Spectrum, and can be seen on facebook.

National Radiographers and Radiation Therapists' Week 3-8 November 2014

   Ballarat Austin Radiation Oncology Centre
NRRTW 2014

This year's NRRTW photo and video competition was very popular, with many departments going above and beyond with their celebrations.

It was a tight competition and the scores were very close but we are delighted to announce the triumphant department which received top prize was Ballarat Austin Radiation Oncology Centre! They partnered up with Sovereign Hill and had a Gold Rush-themed day to celebrate the ‘gold standard’ in cancer care, and also raised money for the Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Care Centre (BRICC) Wellness Centre. Their efforts caught the eye of the media and featured in local papers and radio. It was an incredible effort and they are truly deserving winners of this year’s competition.

We had a tie for runner-up, with The Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre - Westmead Hospital and Tamworth Hospital both putting on a great celebration. Westmead Hospital chose to celebrate with a German theme which included a morning tea of pretzels and beer (ginger beer of course!), and also talked to the public about radiation therapy.

Tamworth Hospital combined their celebrations with ‘the race that stops a nation’, the Melbourne Cup, and called it ‘A day at the Ray-ces’. They ran a competition for the best-decorated area, dressed up in their racing best, held a CPD session relating to equine radiation therapy and each patient was given a trophy to celebrate.

Congratulations to every department that entered the competition! All the photos submitted can be viewed on our facebook page.

National Radiographers and Radiation Therapists' Week 4-8 November 2013

NRRTW 2013

Congratulations to all those who submitted entries and especially to the winners of our 2013 NRRTW Photo/Video Competition, Tamworth Hospital, NSW, and to the runner-up, Liverpool Hospital, Sydney!

We would like to thank everyone who entered - you all did a great job at celebrating and promoting the profession! We look forward to seeing what you come up with next year!

A little about the Tamworth celebrations

On 8 November 2013 the Radiation Therapy and Radiography teams at Tamworth Hospital invited all staff to a tropical-themed BBQ to celebrate World Radiography Day and Roentgen’s love of sausages and sunshine. During NRRTW the departments were decorated with a tropical “Soaking up the Rays” theme. As well as the Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology Departments participating, Day Infusion (Chemo suite), Clinical Trials, Hotel Services and Volunteers departments participated, along with many patients who dressed tropical for the occasion.

All Radiation Therapy patients were greeted with a floral lei on arrival. Many of the areas also participated in a decorating competition which was subsequently judged by Hospital Exec. The winners were the Radiation Therapy planning team, with a display in CT that included a surprise guest appearance.

Tamworth requested that in lieu of a prize, we make a donation to the Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan Appeal, following the tragedy that struck the Philippines. Their entry showed their amazing team spirit and passion for their work, and it was a creative and entertaining video.
