The Health Protection Service (HPS), Health Risk Facilities and Radiation Safety (HRF&RS) section is a seeking a Radiation Safety Officer to support the functions of the Radiation Safety unit and be part of a multidisciplinary section within HPS comprising of: Radiation Safety; Health Care Facilities, and Infection Control.

As a Radiation Safety Officer in the Radiation Safety unit, you will be required to deliver a variety of regulatory activities related to radiation safety and help enforce the principles of radiation protection including the process of Justification, Optimisation and Limitation, and ensure that radiation exposures to workers, patients, members of the public and the environment are kept as low as reasonably achievable. This includes radiation source registration and user licensing, compliance monitoring and surveillance and enforcement actions under the Radiation Protection Act 2006, and related codes of practice. The role will be required to provide advice on radiation safety matters and facilitate community understanding of radiation safety issues and provide administrative support to the ACT Radiation Advisory Committee on behalf of the HPS.

The ideal applicant will have a good understanding of radiation safety and protection and experience in or knowledge of regulation.

Eligibility/Other Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualifications or equivalent in science with a major in physics, nuclear science, or an associated discipline relevant to radiation protection and/or radiation emitting devices.
  • Current driver’s licence.
  • Prior to commencement, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.

Desirable:

  • Regulatory experience or experience in the application of regulatory requirements.
