Membership of external groups

ASMIRT is a founding member of several bodies that directly influence the practice of our professions. We work alongside these governing and peak representative bodies for the benefit of our Members and patients. 

Radiation Oncology Alliance

The Society is a founding member of the Radiation Oncology Alliance.

This is a cojoint committee of:

  • Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy
  • Faculty of Radiation Oncology of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiology
  • Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine
  • Cancer Nurses Society of Australia.

The Alliance:

  • represents a key forum for collaboration between the radiation therapy professions in the areas of quality, standards, workforce and public interest
  • acts as an important liaison point for the Department of Heath and Cancer Australia
  • communicates key sector priorities to all levels of governments and jurisdictions
  • maintains effective communication between the constituent bodies
  • makes recommendations on any other work that significantly affects the radiation oncology sector

Peak Imaging Coalition

ASMIRT is a member of the Peak Imaging Coalition.

This is a coalition of:

  • Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy 
  • Faculty of Clinical Radiology of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists
  • Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine
  • Australasian Sonographers Association
  • Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine

The coalition:

  • represents a key forum for collaboration between the medical imaging professions in the areas of quality, standards, workforce an public interest
  • acts as an important liaison point for the Department of Health and its committees and working groups
  • communicates key sector priorities to all levels of government and jurisdictions
  • maintains communication between the constituent bodies
  • make recommendations to constituent bodies on any other work that significantly affects the radiology sector

Ahpra Professional Reference Group

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) Professional Reference Group provides a forum for engagement between Ahpra and the peak bodies, whose members are regulated through the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme. The scheme is administered by Ahpra.

The reference group addresses issues such as:

  • developments in the implementation and operation of the national scheme
  • issues affecting the professions in the administration of the national scheme
  • experience with the implementation and operation of the national scheme, and
  • professional and environmental issues that impact, or potentially impact, the national scheme

Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry

ASMIRT is a representative body on the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry.

The objectives of ASAR are to promote high standards of medical sonography, including:

  • to set uniform, minimum standards of sonographer training and education
  • to assess and to accredit programs of sonographer training and education
  • to accredit medical sonographers

Allied Health Professionals Australia

ASMIRT is a member of the Allied Health Professionals Australia (AHPA), which has an important strategic role as the body Federal Government and other national organisations refer to when seeking a collective view on allied health.

Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency

The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) is the Federal Government’s primary authority on radiation protection and nuclear safety. ASMIRT has a close relationship with ARPANSA and a seat on the ARPANSA Multidetector CT (MDCT) – Dose Reference Levels (DRL) Committee.

International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists

ASMIRT members are automatically affiliated members of the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists. This global organisation works to improve the standards of delivery and practice of medical imaging and radiation therapy throughout the world. It acts as the international liaison organisation for medical radiation technology and promotes quality patient care, education and research in the radiation sciences.

Image Gently

The Image Gently Alliance is an international coalition of health care organisations dedicated to providing safe, high quality pediatric imaging worldwide. The primary objective of the Alliance is to raise awareness in the imaging community of the need to adjust radiation dose when imaging children.

European Society for Radiotherapy & Oncology

The European Society for Radiotherapy & Oncology (ESTRO) focuses on translating science and evidence into practice. It support all radiotherapy professionals in their needs of continuous professional development across Europe and through other member bodies internationally. ESTRO embraces its role in policy, through partnerships with all relevant stakeholders.

Medical Radiation Practice Council of NSW

The Medical Radiation Practice Council of NSW protects public health and safety by managing complaints about health practitioners and students. They work with the Health Care Complaints Commission to to determine the optimal approach for addressing complaints. In addressing a complaint, the Council works with the practitioner to raise their level of professional performance and to ensure they maintain high professional standards.
