Lydia is a registered nurse who was diagnosed with breast cancer. The radiographers who took her scans ensured she was diagnosed quickly and made her feel comfortable and included throughout the process. This is Lydia’s story.

I found a left breast lump that didn’t feel right. I booked into a mammogram and ultrasound as part of the initial investigation. On reviewing the images, it was clear that I needed to have a biopsy.

Since receiving the Stage 3 Breast Cancer diagnosis, I’ve had heart scans, bone scans, CT’s and further ultrasounds, aside from my cancer treatment.

The imaging procedures were really efficient and quick. The radiographers and sonographer sent the results to my oncologist and GP immediately to guide my ongoing treatment. The fast turn-around meant I could get the biopsy done the same day, which in turn, lessened the time between finding the lump and starting treatment for the aggressive breast cancer that I had.

Considering I work alongside the radiographers and sonographers at the same hospital, they were all highly professional, respectful, empowering and resourceful. It could be a bit weird going through such a vulnerable time with clinicians that you know, but they did not make me feel at all concerned or embarrassed. I felt included in my cancer journey, I understand what is happening and what to anticipate next. I am confident it will continue to go well.

I’ve got 4 more months of immunotherapy to go, then I’m just on hormone blockers to keep that cheeky cancer devil at bay. I’ll be seeing the crew for occasional tracking scans, but it will be nice to be back on the clinician side of the bed, knowing that when I refer patients for imaging, they too will get excellent care. Oh, and more time hanging upside-down!!

I am so grateful for the friendly and familiar faces when I come in to Medical Imaging appointments as a patient on the ‘other side of the bed’, knowing my care is in professional, evidence based, safe hands!
