Delivering the National Lung Cancer Screening Program

13 August 2025

The National Lung Cancer Screening Program aims to achieve better health outcomes for Australians by detecting lung cancer early and saving lives.

The program provides free low-dose CT scans to high-risk individuals every two years to support early detection of lung cancer.

Australians are eligible for the program if they are:

  • aged between 50-70 years, and
  • show no signs or symptoms suggesting they may have lung cancer (that is, they are asymptomatic) and
  • currently smoke or have quit smoking in the past 10 years and have a history of tobacco cigarette smoking of at least 30 pack-years.

Program participants will start to book in for their free low-dose CT scan. It's important that all radiographers are familiar with the program and requirements.

What radiographers can do to support the program:

  • Familiarise yourself with the program guidelines
  • Download the NLCSP low-dose chest CT acquisition guidelines
  • Ensure your practice is registered with the NCSR, which is needed for program reporting via Radiologists
  • Complete the CPD accredited eLearning modules developed by Lung Foundation Australia and RANZCR.
