The Student Pantry is an ASMIRT initiative to help students during clinical placement.
A 2025 survey of ASMIRT student members found that during placement:
• Almost 20% have considered dropping out due to financial stress,
• 15% skip meals because they can’t afford groceries.
That’s where the Student Pantry comes in. We’re inviting you to share food with placement students and help them feel supported, nourished and valued as they train to become the next generation of MRPs.
Joining the Student Pantry is easy.
Order a Student Pantry pack, which includes posters, stickers, and an optional cardboard hamper basket to help promote the Pantry in your workplace. Then simply add good (and healthy!) food, including protein-rich snacks, to help fuel students during placement.
Everyone is welcome to contribute. It’s a simple way to share food, positive energy, and show the strength of our amazing MRS community.
From 1 July 2027, the Australian Government will include Medical Radiation Science Students in the Commonwealth Practice Payment scheme of up to $338.60 per week while on placement.

ASMIRT has lobbied hard to have the inclusion of MRS students in the scheme and we welcome the commitment of the Australian Government.
Through to the inclusion date, MRS students will continue to be unpaid during placement, creating a significant burden on their finances, hence the need to continue with the Student Pantry.
