The Student Pantry is a new ASMIRT initiative designed to support students during clinical placement. It allows MRPs to order a pack with a cardboard hamper basket, stickers and posters, that can be set up as a miniature "pantry" in the clinic or department, for students in need. The Student Pantry allows MRPs to donate food anonymously, for placement students to collect without stigma.

The idea for the Student Pantry came following a 2025 survey of ASMIRT student members, which found that during placement:
• Almost 20% of students consider dropping out due to financial stress.
• 15% skip meals because they can’t afford groceries.

Initiatives like the Student Pantry can reduce stress for students on placement and promote a supportive culture across the profession.
This year, 40 per cent of Australians will rely on a radiographer or radiation therapist for a scan or cancer treatment.
Through a national awareness campaign, ASMIRT is bringing the issue of student poverty to the public and calling for action.
Visit our dedicated campaign website and sign the petition to include radiography and radiation therapy students in the government’s practice payment scheme – and help protect the future of patient care.
