Mobile CT for rural areas valuable, but must be operated by radiographers

7 July 2025

ASMIRT President Naomi Gibson is quoted today in an ABC News story about a collaboration of Australian and overseas organisations working towards a mobile CT scanner that would provide services to rural and remote areas.

Naomi has expressed her support of the technology as long as the CT scanners are operated by radiographers, as opposed to the suggestion that they may be operated by ‘generalists’.

"We certainly see the value in rural and regional areas," Naomi says.

"Exactly like the universally accepted and successful mobile BreastScreen program, the scans will be best undertaken by radiographers, and I am confident that radiographers will be keen to do this mobile work, the same as they are with BreastScreen.

"Radiographers hold a licence to use radiation for medical purposes, generalists do not. To become a proficient radiographer requires a four-year degree, about a year of full-time clinical placement experience and registration with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia."
