RadPod episode 6: Radiography in the Dark Ages

30 September 2025

What did medical imaging look like 50 years ago? Retired radiographer and former ASMIRT President Bruce Harvey, and recent graduate Tate Brazil, join RadPod host Steve Lacey to discuss the evolution of radiography. The past five decades have seen big changes, from radiography equipment and patient care, to awareness of mental wellbeing in the workplace.

Bruce reminisces on processing X-ray films by hand in the dark room, and using film changers for angiography. Tate shares her views on radiography becoming more and more specialised. She says new radiographers are receiving greater education on CT and MRI, and not spending as much time learning general X-ray.

From left to right: Tate Brazil, Steve Lacey and Bruce Harvey.

Listen to the end to hear Bruce and Tate share some of their more difficult experiences at work, and a meaningful discussion on the importance of having a formal debrief after a traumatic incident.
