Showing students their career options in Medical Radiation Sciences

He has 7 years’ experience in radiation therapy now, but Eddie didn’t know much about the field when he first considered it as a career.

Graduate nuclear medicine technologist Sara had a similar experience.

“I was under the impression that nuclear medicine was just scanning and operating cameras,” she said.

“But it’s so much more than that.”

ASMIRT’s latest career video is designed for high school students considering their career options. Many students will have never heard of medical radiation practice, while others might be unsure of what it involves. Through the Society’s partnership with Explore Careers, the video will be provided to high school careers counsellors around Australia.

ASMIRT President Naomi Gibson hopes some young people who watch the video feel inspired enough to enter the field.

“Targeting high school careers counsellors is a great way to reach young people when they’re making decisions about their future,” she says.

“We want high school students to know medical radiation science exists, and that it’s a rewarding career option if you like science, technology and helping people.”

ASMIRT thanks Dayna, Eddie, Sara, Jacob for sharing their stories, and Austin Health for providing their facilities. ASMIRT also thanks the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nuclear Medicine for their collaboration on the Nuclear Medicine content.
