How Inclusive Care Improves the Patient Experience

16 April 2026

Trauma is at the forefront of the everyday-care Medical Radiation Professionals provide to patients, but what about the trauma you can't see on monitors, between the scans? The trauma an MRI can't image, but we may only begin to imagine?

Enter, the elephant in the imaging room.

Author Marie McInerney heard from guests and speakers at #ASMIRT2026 to add a lens to the types of trauma patients can, and have experienced during their MRI's - highlighting the importance of a trauma-informed approach to care.

Hearing from ASMIRT 2026's guest speakers - Senior Lecturer in medical imaging of Charles Stuart University, Johnathan Hewis, along with Austin Hospital MRI Radiographer, Emily Ross - Marie touches on the types of hidden patient trauma MRP's can encounter. From PTSD to claustrophobia, both speakers share stories of patient trauma, and the ways in which MRP's can name the elephant in the room, before they start scanning.
