MRI Safety Week 22-26 July

MRI Safety Week 22-26 July

23 July 2024

MRI Safety Week is recognised in the last week of July each year, and was established following the tragic 2001 MRI-related death of Michael Colombini, age 6. The week seeks to educate medical radiation practitioners on MRI safety and prevent future tragedies.

This MRI Safety Week we’re listening to a conversation between Head of MRI at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, Mike Kean, and our Director of Education, Steve Lacey. Recorded in 2022, this still-relevant podcast episode provides an overview of MRI and what you need to consider before entering the scan room.

These days, skin burns are the most common MRI-related injury in patients. A recent systematic review published by the Journal of Medical Radiation Sciences (JMRS) estimated radiographers can prevent 97% of MRI-related skin burns, by complying with the following safety recommendations:

  • Remove any electrically conductive items
  • Insulate the patient to prevent any conductive loops or contact with objects
  • Communicate regularly

With thermal injuries continuing to impact MRI safety, strategies to prevent skin burns and heating are essential.
